Why did it start ? :
In the late eighteenth century, France had an absolute monarchy system, which the king had to most power and believes that it was a great system, however unpopular with the citizens of france due to the lack of equal rights and opportunity. The country itself lived under the Ancien Regime, which society of France was separated into three levels. The 1st level was the highest group of society, where they are very rich, holding more power and rights. The 2nd level was the nobility group, where they are not as poor, having very limited power and rights. During that time, the 2nd level was the middle class of society, but it was still in development and that lacked political power from society. The last level was the rest of French society, with lots of peasants, containing almost 25 million people. These people are the lowest group of society, suffering from high taxes and being poor, lack of rights to freedom of speech, and had no power or other type of rights. They also had a shortage of food, high food prices, lots of unemployment, over population, and an irresponsible aristocracy, who refused to improve the situation by taking part of the financial burden. They nation was also angry at King Louis XVI's failure to successfully manage and finances the country, causing it to plumb into a terrible state. A great example would be the funding and support for the American Revolution, where France has been giving away resources to support America. However, France was getting weaker in it's financial state and had huge debts to pay off. As a result, the angry mobs of people started to protest and rebel in towns and large cities like Marseilles and Versailles, soon leading to a path of revolution filled with violence and destruction. The way of rejecting the monarchy was greatly symbolised by the storming of Bastilles prison, which the citizens of France stormed and fought with the soldiers protecting it, freeing prisoners, and lastly executing King Louis XVI and his wife Marie - Antoinette.
